The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum was established by the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation in 1939. In 1959 it opened in it’s current location in a magnificent easily recognized architectural masterpiece designed by Frank Lloyd Wright.
Enter the immense rotunda currently decorated with a stunning red Alexander Calder mobile Red Lily Pads (1956).Follow the long continuous spiral ramp extending from the ground level to the ceiling skylight.
The current exhibition “Visionaries: Creating a Modern Guggenheim” is an showing of the permanent collection from the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York and the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, Venice. Celebrating the 80th anniversary of the Solomon R. Guggenheim foundation this exhibit includes 170 pieces. The visionaries are the art dealers who collected the new avant-garde art pieces coming out of Europe in the late 19th century through the mid 20th century. These visionaries ultimately gave their collections in whole or in part to the Guggenheim Foundation. Notable in this collection is the large number of Vasily Kandinsky paintings and Jackson Pollock’s Alchemy (1947) which is being shown in the United States for the first time in almost 50 years. There are also 25 works rarely displayed outside the Venice Peggy Guggenheim Collection.

The Wright recently reopened with a redesign and features a stunning hand-stitched canvas by American artist Sarah Crowner.
Executive Chef Alejandro Cortez is currently presenting his new spring menu. We were privileged to be able to sample his delightful dishes and it was a culinary experience to remember. Chef Alejandro’s creativity is expressed in the elegant presentation of the dishes, the use of fresh ingredients and the depth of flavors. This small cozy restaurant in the Solomon Guggenheim Museum will satisfy even the most discriminating foodie. It was definitely one of the highlights of our trip to New York.
