Statue of Liberty and the Liberty Island Museum

“Liberty Enlightening the World” was a gift from the people of France to the people of the United States as a universal symbol of freedom and democracy. Dedicated in 1886.

Tickets to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island can be purchased at Castle Clinton. One of four forts built in the New York area to defend against the British. Originally named Southwest Battery and constructed between 1808 and 1811 this fort was armed with 28 cannons which could shoot at a distance of 1.5 miles. In 1817 the fort was renamed Castle Clinton to honor Dewitt Clinton, Governor of New York.

“The Sphere” was originally in the plaza of the World Trade Center. Damaged during the events of September 11 2001 it was placed in Battery Park in 2002. Artist Fritz Koenig designed the scupture as a symbol of world peace but later it became a memorial to those who lost their lives in the terrorist attacks.

Board one of the boats that will take you to the Statue of Liberty. Miss Ellis Island played a important role during the September 11 2001 terrorists attacks. This vessel and it’s crew of employee volunteers provided the New York City Fire Department with a means of emergency evacuation from ground zero.

Liberty Island Museum is located in the lobby of the pedestal. You can follow the idea of the Statue of Liberty by Edouard de Laboulaye to the design by Frederic Bartholdi over 21 years.

The stone pedestal was designed by Richard Morris Hunt and is half the height of the monument.The pedestal sits on top of the remains of Fort Wood. Fort Wood was built between 1808 and 1811 in the shape of an eleven pointed star. In 1883 the Statue of Liberty’s pedestal was built inside the fort.
