Naples and the Ruins of Pompeii

Castle Nuovo is a medieval castle built in 1279 in the City of Naples.

Naples is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world . The historic city center is 4200 acres which makes it the largest in Europe. It is listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. The worlds first pizzeria opened here in 1830 Antica Pizzeria Port’Alba. The National Archeological Museum is one of the first to be built in Europe and houses many of the mosaics of Pompeii.

The Santa Chiara complex includes a monastery and museum and a secret garden.. Built in 1313-1340.

Majolica tiles on octagonal columns depicting scenes of hunting, dancing, and village life. These were made in the 18th century hand painted by Donato and Giuseppe Massa.

The Ruins of Pompeii

This ancient Roman city was buried under volcanic ash when Mount Vesuvius located 5 miles away erupted in 79AD.

This well preserved site is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city of Pompeii was an affluent vacation destination because of its important seaport location. There were over 15,000 inhabitants living in the city. They built roads for chariots and stepping stones for the citizens. An aqueduct brought water for the public baths and fountains. An amphitheater was built for gladiator games and they also had theaters built for plays and concerts.
