The largest city in the Basque Country, Bilbao was at one time the wealthiest city in Spain. It’s wealth at the beginning of the 20th century due to mining, steel and shipbuilding. Later the city began to move away from industry and towards tourism and underwent a major urban renewal.

This medieval 10th century walled town is surrounded with vineyards. You can visit some of the wine cellars located under the town. Once used as a military fort Laguardia built a network of tunnels underground to protect its citizens. The tunnels later became the perfect place to store wine.
